London, our beautiful capital city – a business hub, cultural centre and a wonder for food.
I’m off there next weekend, and some of the weekdays for what will hopefully be a culinary adventure. Who says you need to go to the continent! The main event is ‘Blokes Eat Beef’ [More on that next week] on the Monday, but this means I will have time to kill from the Sunday through to the Tuesday.
I’m being sensible – I know the chance of me being ‘fit’ for work AND in Birmingham on Tuesday are slim to none.
This gives me time to have a wander through London, Breakfast, Brunch, Lunch, Afternoon Tea, Dinner etc can all be done! I’ve purposefully got no other plans, bar a bit of culture at the V&A.
What are the secret, and not so secret gems of London that I should consider going to? I have a little list, but I want to be spoilt with choices.
So go on, spill!

I went to a place on Upper Street called galipoli. There are 3 of the same places more-or-less next door to each other. Was good food and great fun. Toilets were very strange but you’ll have to go to experience it. Not sure which one I went to though. Certainly not the one closest to the corner. Think it was the one with the burgundy sign.
See here for a street view hopefully.
Ok, Borough Market is an absolute MUST. Amazing food and drink, I recommend cheers buying at Neal’s Yard and KaseSwiss then a hot salt beef sandwich with gherkins and mustard followed by a pint of something interesting at The Rake.
For a cheap, amazing, tasty dinner try Tayyabs (long queues usual) or the Lahore Kebab house and grill. Both quite close to Brick Lane.
If you are planning a foodie adventure then of course you’ll be in Borough, so try http://www.tapasbrindisa.com/
Definitely recommend a place I went to on Friday – Turkish restaurant in New Cross [two overground stops from London Bridge to St Johns] called Mangal Meze [sp?] just got a Time Out 2010 award on top of years of others. Cracking food, huge portions, home made bread, amazing dips and a variety of grilled skewered meats cooked in front of your mince pies. Cheap, friendly and delicious. £65 for three w drinks
Pete – The Rake, good choice for beer – many hazy memories upon leaving there.
Mike – Brindisa – Been before, do Borough quite often so may head a bit further off the beaten track.
Lyle – Oooh Turkish, sounds good Lyle. Little ‘tips’ like that rock, really should check out TimeOut – so many things to do.
